 Domaine Julien Masquin

The vines have been in Julien Masquin’s family for three generations and, until 2009, all the grapes grown were sold to the local cooperative.  About 55 acres are under vine but only 3 acres are used for the white Châteauneuf-du-Pape.  Following wine school in Avignon, Julien became an employee of Vieux Telegraphe, one of the top vineyards in Châteauneuf.  Julien works his vineyards by hand, with no chemical additives, and yields are extremely low.

Masquin CdR Humeur Blanc 2015 (#27-22)

This lovely white wine is made from 60% Grenache Blanc, 15% Clairette and 10% Bourboulenc.  It’s color is almost clear but with a hint of straw.  Its nose reflects aromas of white peach, apple, a hint of lilac and a touch of anise.  In the mouth it is fresh and round with a lengthy finish.

Grapes:  Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc

Pairings:  excellent as an aperitif or with light summer dishes, warm or cold

Region: Rhone Valley Vineyard:  Domaine Julien Masquin
Masquin CdR Humeur Rouge 2016 (#27-27)

With 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, production is around 30hl/ha (very small for CdR, the average production being about 45hl/hectare). Only old vines (around 60 years old) and Grenache are planted on a stony soil that is the same as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, while Syrah are planted on a sandy soil for more softness and fruit. After alcoholic fermentation the wine is aged for 4-6 months  in a  big barrel (foudre) of French oak.

Grapes: Grenache (60%), Syrah (40%)

Region: Rhone Valley Vineyard:  Domaine Julien Masquin
Masquin Montplaisir CNDP Blanc 2016 (#27-26)

Made from grapes grown on only about 3 acres of land, the wine is 70% Grenache Blanc and 30% Bourboulenc.  Its color is of a pale straw with aromas of white peaches, apples, yellow plums and a touch of mint.  In the mouth it is rich, round and fresh with a long finish.

Grapes:  70% Grenache Blanc, 30% Bourboulenc

Region: Rhone Valley Vineyard:  Domaine Julien Masquin
Masquin Montplaisir Rouge 2015 (#27-25)

This 2010 Chateauneuf-du-Pape “Montplaisir” is a rich and full wine with great upside as well as aging ability.  It is a blend of grapes from the famed sector known as La Crau.  It boasts a dense ruby/purple/plum color along with chewy kirsch, garrigue, pepper and lavender characteristics, medium to full body, excellent power and concentration and light to moderate tannins that should resolve in 1-3 years. This wine will drink nicely for 10-12 years.

Grapes: 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 20% Mourvèdre

Region: Rhone Valley Vineyard:  Domaine Julien Masquin
